Social Media and the Return of Harry Styles

Alright, I know that nobody is surprised with me choosing to write about Harry Styles this week. He has been one of my favorite artists ever since I fell in love with One Direction in 2013. Yes I was one of those teenage girls who wore their tee shirts, had all of the CD's and went to all the concerts she could get tickets to. I saw him perform as One Direction three times and on his own once. In his solo albums the sound is more relaxed and alternative, and absolutely fits his voice and personality. Over the past month he has come out from his two year break between albums, having announced his new album to release in December as well as an international tour this coming summer. The first single off of the new album already has 33 million views on YouTube and has broken various records for how quickly it jumped to the top of the charts after its release. I watched the premiere of the video while video chatting with my best friend from home who tends to be my partner in crime when it comes to concerts.

Harry's use of social media is very strategic. He hadn't posted on Instagram since his last tour ended, so when he began posting the vague phrase "Do You Know Who You Are?" his followers nearly lost their minds. He began interacting with fans on Twitter that same day, and at midnight the single dropped to officially begin a new era which fans are referring to as "HS2 Era". He knows that spacing out his posts make them more meaningful, and that social media is the best way to ignite his fanbase into action when new things are happening. While he doesn't post constantly, there is a type of content calendar that makes sure he spaces things out enough that fans notice each individual post and value their importance. Overall, I'm already counting down the days until I see him in Cleveland next summer. For now you can enjoy a photo from his tour in Summer 2018!

  1. I haven't found any artists that I am completely in love with yet, but once I do, I will definitely be the same way. But it is very interesting how celebrities use social media to create a need to stay updated. When you are interested in something a celebrity promotes, they can manipulate their social media platforms to keep people super interested. Thanks for sharing!
