Yes, I Know I'm "Basic"

It's fall in Ohio, which means your local teenage girls are all flocking to apple orchards and anywhere they can take a photo with the orange and red leaves. Of course it's fun sometimes to poke fun at them for being "basic" but it isn't always a bad thing to be. I honestly consider myself to fall under that category during the whole year. It's just the type of person I am.

I have the typical black rain boots, jean jacket and mild (okay maybe severe) Starbucks addiction. Walking through fallen leaves is something that brings me genuine joy and I'm not ashamed of that. On top of the fall stereotypes, I'm in a sorority, have the rose gold iPhone and spend more time on Instagram than is probably healthy for a 20 year old college student. Despite these things that may seem off-putting or negative to others, we aren't all the same. Take my roommates for example, Anna loves pumpkin flavored foods during this time of the year and she's also one of the smartest people I've ever met. Maddy probably would have a breakdown without her favorite North Face rain jacket but she's involved in leadership across campus doing amazing things for our student body. Liking things that seem stereotypical doesn't make you any less of an individual. We all have different interests and desires to chase after while here at Ohio Northern. There's a lot of power in getting to know people before you criticize them.

Next time you want to spend your time judging girls for being what you consider "basic" try to remember that we're people too. Grab your rain boots and come hang out with us sometime. I'm sure I'll be able to snap that perfect picture for your Instagram profile update.

  1. Allie,

Ooh I need a good Instagram picture because all my old pictures are super "basic." I really liked the post and as I was reading through it a picture was getting painted in my head. A beautiful picture of you walking around with your Starbucks coffee on red and orange leaves. I feel refreshed. Now I wanna do that too.

  2. Fall is my favorite time of the year. The sound and feeling of crunching leaves under my feet is something that brings me pure joy. I think everything you said in this post is correct. Just because we like some things that other also like, that doesn't mean that we aren't independent and have our own interests, qualities, and goals.

  3. Hello,
Fall is a great time of year! The stereotypes of a basic female should be banished in our society. I agree that woman are able to like everything and still have very vocal opinions of life. Keep enjoying all that fall has to offer, I'm right there with you Allie!
    Thanks for sharing,
    Alyson
