The Growth of Youtube Documentaries

It wasn't until recently that Youtube creators started a new path for the platform. This new journey is that of making full documentary-style productions for your individual channel. While the new practice hasn't grown to be too big yet, Shane Dawson is leading the way. His previous works include focuses on Tana Mongeau and the disaster that was TanaCon, Jake Paul, and makeup mogul Jeffree Star. His first series with Jeffree occurred in Summer 2018. Yesterday marked the beginning of a new adventure for the two on Youtube.

After months of preparation, filming and anticipation the first episode of this 9 part series was uploaded in the early evening on Tuesday. Both fans and haters of Jeffree and Shane fled to Youtube in order to see the beginning of Shane's adventure into creating a line with Jeffree Star Cosmetics. The video already has 9 million views in under 24 hours. This is a prime example of the power that creators have on any given platform when they create a lot of hype and discussion regarding a long-term project they've been working on.

The series will continue for the next several weeks, and will only continue to grow in views as time goes on. With the first episode being an hour in length, we can only begin to speculate that the series will be the length of multiple feature films. I encourage everyone to watch Shane's various documentary style works on Youtube. It is only going to continue growing in popularity amongst creators to make this style of content, and we have the opportunity now to see how that trend is beginning.

  1. I'm so glad you are blogging about this because I absolutely love Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star. I was so excited when they announced they were making a documentary series, and I couldn't wait to watch it. I love their friendship, and have been following them on YouTube ever since they made their first video together.

  2. Oh My God, I love these two so much. I mean I got in trouble with people from the Res Life , International department and Washington D.C. office because of my dark humour. Someone told the school authorities that I was talking about killing myself so they were concerned and I was so disappointed. I was like Shane dawson has like 20M followers, I bet they all get the dark humour and I couldn't meet even one of them? I get people who report me for saying I'd rather die than eat at mac. My life is a mess... this series is the only thing that is keeping me alive. (don't report me please)
